Google Business Profile Mistakes That Kill Local Leads
For a lot of local businesses, Google Business Profile (GBP) is the first page customers see, not your website. Wrong hours, stale photos, or a half-finished profile can cost you calls and visits every week without you noticing. Here are the mistakes we see most, and how to fix them.
1. Incomplete or wrong categories
Your primary category tells Google what you are. Pick the closest match for what people actually search, not the vague option that feels “close enough.” Add secondary categories only when they describe real services you offer. Keyword stuffing categories does not help, and Google can demote profiles that look spammy.
2. Name, address, and phone that do not match everywhere
If your GBP says one street name, your website says another, and Yelp has an old suite number, Google trusts you less. Use the same business name, address, and phone (NAP) everywhere you list yourself. If you moved, update GBP first, then every other listing.
3. Hours that lie
Nothing kills a local lead faster than driving over (or calling) during hours you marked open. Keep regular hours accurate. Set special hours for holidays, short days, and temporary closures. If you are appointment-only, say so clearly in your description and attributes.
4. Ignoring reviews (or only reacting when they are bad)
Reviews are social proof and a ranking signal. Ask happy customers for a short, honest review. Reply to every review, good and bad, in a calm, useful way. Do not bribe for five-star ratings, and do not argue in public. A thoughtful reply to a tough review often wins more trust than silence.
5. Old photos and no posts
Profiles with recent, real photos of the place, team, and work tend to get more clicks. Stock photos and a logo from 2019 send the opposite signal. Add fresh photos regularly. Use GBP posts for offers, updates, and seasonal work so the profile looks alive.
6. Leaving products, services, and Q&A empty
If Google gives you fields for services, products, or menu items, fill them with plain language customers use. Watch the Q&A section. Answer real questions yourself before random users fill it with guesswork.
7. Duplicate or unclaimed listings
Two profiles for the same location split reviews and confuse Google. Claim every listing that is actually you. Merge or close duplicates. Never create a second profile to “start fresh” after a bad review streak.
A 30-minute hygiene checklist
- Confirm primary category and trim junk secondary categories.
- Match NAP to your website footer and Google Maps pin.
- Fix regular and special hours for the next 30 days.
- Upload 5 to 10 real photos from this month.
- Reply to any unanswered reviews from the last 90 days.
- Publish one short GBP post (offer, update, or tip).
- Search your business name and close or claim stray listings.
This is basic local SEO hygiene. It will not replace a strong website or ongoing content, but it stops the silent leaks that cost local leads.
